DENTAL FEES AND YOUR INSURANCE
"USUAL AND CUSTOMARY"
You may receive notification from your insurance company stating that the dental fees are "higher than usual and customary". To arrive at this conclusion, the insurance company will survey a geographical area, calculate an average fee from all the practices in that area, and then takes that fee and considers it customary. Included in this survey are discount clinics and managed care facilities, which will bring down the average. Most doctors in private practice will have fees that are defined as "above usual and customary". We believe that 'usual and customary' tends to mean just average, and our dentistry is not in that category.

YOUR VISIT TO THE DENTIST CAN BE A LIFESAVER
THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT ORAL CANCER AND ORAL LESIONS
The good news is that when detected early, cancerous oral lesions can be completely cured.
Fortunately, most oral sores and lesions are not harmful. But a small number are dangerous, and if not identified early, they may progress to a more advanced stage.
Oral cancer is a devastating disease when detected in it's later stages. Late stage treatment usually involves major facial surgery with only half of such patients surviving past five years. Therefore, it is so important to see your dentist regularly so that dangerous lesions can be detected at an early, curable stage. Regular dental check-ups, which include an examination of the entire mouth, are essential for early detection.
An oral lesion may be a persistent sore or irritation, a small, flat, red or white patch, or a growth, lump, thickening, rough spot, crust, or irritated area.
Because harmful lesions often look identical to those that are harmless, testing can be done to determine those that are troublesome. There is a quick and painless test that can accurately identify which oral lesions need further treatment. This test is called a brush biopsy, and does not require anesthesia, and causes minimal to no bleeding or discomfort. It is completed in minutes here in our office, then sent to Oral Scan Laboratories, where after a special computer-assisted analysis, the laboratoy informs the dentist whether the tissue from the lesion contains any abnormal cells.
Oral cancer occurs more often in those who use tobacco in any form, or those who consume large amounts of alcohol. However, oral cancer does occur in 25% of people who do not smoke or who only drink alcohol socially.
In the majority of cases, the sample we obtain will be normal, reassuring you that the oral lesion does not contain precancerous or cancerous cells. All New Patients to Mauthe & Associates will have an oral cancer screening at their inital new patient visit, and all existing patients are screened by the hygienist at each and every cleaning appointment. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 921-1244.
TENSION HEADACHES?PAINFUL, ACHING JAW?
SORE, SENSITIVE TEETH?
If you suffer from these problems, you should know about NTI-tss , Tension Suppression System
The first clinically proven, nondrug method for the prevention of migraine. The NTI splint is a small, virtually invisible mouthpiece that covers only your upper front teeth while you sleep.
The NTI must be custom fitted by your dentist, which usually takes only one 30 minute visit.
In a clinical trial, 82% of migraine sufferers who used the NTI splint for 8 weeks had a 77% average reduction in migraine attacks. The NTI device reduced not only migraine attacks but also the need for medication usually taken to treat migraine pain.
